still a bookworm

In 2012 I read 24 books. In 2013 I attempted to beat that and it was actually difficult because of the goal and I ended up reading 25 books.

For 2014 I set a goal of 52 books. I thought/knew it would be difficult but I didn’t like that I didn’t make much of an improvement. Especially when there are so many books I’ve yet to read and every once in a while I reread some that have really made an impression.

I kicked it off with a legal thriller Second Chair. I divided the number of pages by 7 days of reading and off I went. That particular book was a breeze and so were the next few. I was on roll and each book easier to blast through than the last one.

Unfortunately I broke my foot and contrary to popular belief, it did not translate into more reading. In fact I think it really took a hit because, just about everything else took longer. Point being I slowed down quite a it and the 52 books for 2014 went out the window.

Along with a possible PR at the Long Beach Marathon that I had ran in 2013. (see broken foot).

I did however manage to run the half in 2014 and am actually currently reading my 30th book and am confident I’ll finish before years end. So no Marathon and that’s OK because I’m still running. No 52 books but at 30 books, some would still consider me quite the bookworm.

they gave me a bedtime….your honor

i read an article today about a teenager who decided she would sue her parents. i have to admit that there is not a lot of information just yet. still the internet has taken it and ran away with it.

from “news” agency to news agency the descriptor of her has changed. one did identify her as an honor student but later on in the day she was identified as a cheerleader. why not mention the lacrosse team she was also a part of.

yes i’m sure there is some truth to the fact that she is a bit entitled and well moving in with a best friend who’s father is an attorney doesn’t hurt. (anyone but her parents). just like other parents fight to still have their kids on their insurance and as overall dependents until after college. why shouldn’t the same rules apply to her if she doesn’t want to be “emancipated”.

she is definitely used to a certain lifestyle and that is of there doing so regardless why should the “pay”. let us not forget the fact that their income is taken into account when determining her financial aid eligibility. so why not use those funds if the simple truth that they exist messes her up.

I made the claim on FB that things are fairly similar to a divorce where the wife, up until that point, was OK with financial arrangements but now that we talk about rules or other stipulations, the relationship is not as fun so they made an exit. In all honesty I really hope she wins and if it does start a trend I’m sorry. yet I’m confident that if my children sue me I deserve it because i raised some damn brats.

anyway enough rant for now. #runstreak update Day 97.

alright, alright, alright…..just keep living!

last night i, along with any other film buffs in the city if not the world watched as hollywood’s elite threw a party and told each other how awesome they were.

i think it’s pretty great because i do love the movies and i can’t keep a straight face telling my humble “war” stories let alone really sell some of the roles that last nights nominees were up for.

I take it for what it is entertainment. I don’t think that these people shouldn’t care about certain causes or fights. yet i don’t necessarily think that it’s the place to make statements of a political nature. I feel when one does it seems out of place and the message even is lost because of the opportunistic nature of it.

not to mention someone always seems to have a problem with what these actors say or don’t say. Jared Leto got it “right” this time by talking about people that have lived with the struggles he tried to portray. yet it seems he wasn’t specific enough and so still criticized for it. He mentioned AIDS by name. Matthew Mcconaughey on the other hand did not and then tried to make sense of what he though about 10 years ago and maybe even 10 years before that.

The same could be said for other actors and speeches but I chose to point those two out because it proof of being damned if you do and damned if you don’t. MM did thank God and so that group of people were happy. Is that what he didn’t mention AIDS or the LGTB community. I’ll add that I didn’t read that and if I mention that it’s just because thats how easy these media outlets make a story take off.

With the advent of social media stories spread even faster and i think with even less regard for truth. This group is mad and they should or shouldn’t be. I really think that it’s selfish of us to be upset about what some one said at their party that we were lucky enough to be invited to. Maybe they’ll start doing that in private next time. We would all sit there and read about what went on. If only to criticize what people wore.

I try not to be negative on my blog or on FB but today I guess I chose to vent here before doing so on FB. I figured if I wait till Tuesday all the Oscar buzz will be gone and my feed will go back to fighting about the other celebrities I mean loud mouthed politicians. I guess it could be worse. My friends could all be careless and not read or watch the news.

Take me to the candy, I mean book store.

I purchased a few books today.

At least that’s how I’m telling it. If you talk to my wife about it I may have brought home the entire bookstore and she didn’t want any part of it. She was flabbergasted at the register and I was waiting for her to start asking questions about the library as she does from time to time. Today is gone and it didn’t go anywhere so I’m rushing to put the books away and I might have made it with out a scratch.

I started to think about my trip, and the damage done. I have never really been against the library trips, but I do appreciate owning a “few” books. So I think I might look for the library card and if I truly love a book I might then go buy it. Using that method it will have to be an amazing book to warrant a trip to the book store. Either that or I need to make more “smaller” trips so it’s not all in one bang.

I won’t go through the entire list but I do have to mention “Unbroken”. I’m beyond excited to watch the movie later this year but I was so saddened about not having heard about this incredible man; Louis Zamperini. This is what prompted the trip to the store. I have no idea how all the other books made it into my bag. I also grabbed books for the boy and girl.

I’ve been reading a book a week and I actually think the rate at which I’m reading at has increased quite a bit. So I will read “Unbroken” next week starting Wednesday. So if you haven’t read it yet, hurry up and pick up a copy before a spoiler filled post sometime next week. Fine, no spoilers. You should still go buy this ASAP and read what I know will be an inspiring journey.

Unbroken

Post a day be damned today almost got away from me. the wife was working late which means I was playing a game of 2 on 1 that I have to admit I did pretty well on.

anyway right when I was about to throw in the towel I remembered a trailer that I saw today and well I thought to myself I better share it because just as I had never heard of this man, others may never had heard about him or the book this movie is based on.

So here it is? Have any of you read the book? I will be buying the book tomorrow and will be watching Angelina Jolie’s take it as soon as possible. If any of you have hooks ups for me to watch it right away , let me know.

i’ve been so distracted

On the west side of N Harper blvd in West LA/Hollywood Tuesdays are street cleaning days.

I did not know that when I parked about 15 minutes early for work. I pulled out my book and read yet another chapter. It was an incredible book and well despite a good read. It turned into a fairly expensive one because it distracted me from reading the clearly visible signs.

Since I was in speed reading mode (Which works in a book because it easier to pick up context) I completely blew past Tuesday and thought I read Thursday and even awesome about the prime real estate parking spot I grabbed.

It turns out 15 minutes after parking the ticket wielding officer was typing away at my ticket. I watch from afar and though I’d at least make the parking ticket worth it and keep that sidewalk. It’s for $73 So the longer I stayed there the cheaper I suppose the parking was.

I drove off, and swear to you that I was supposed to get some rest today. In hopes that tomorrow I’m less of a Zombie. Even more so since I’ll be working from home. Well for now I guess I better find the check book. Damn parking enforcement.

February is looking good

Update post.

Just 29 more days to go until LA Marathon which means day 71 of #runstreak. The wife had a girls night out so I didn’t go on my run until pretty late and it’s alive but it meant another 1 mile day even though tomorrow should be just a mile since it’s “rest day”.

I finished rereading Divergent. I also started reading another book for week 6 of my #bookaweek challenge.

Work is starting to flow a lot better. although still at times a little frustrating considering everything is just so unbelievably new to me. still the confidence grows daily and it is especially helpful on days that I work from home since it’s on those days that I particularly tough on my self.

I realized I have yet to make it out to a movie since “last year” so I think I may have to make my birthday weekend (next weekend) be a movie weekend. Preferably the nice big lazy-boy seats at our new little theater spot. nope not going to tell you where.
